The whole "Chess Battle" event is held every Monday on FICS and is composed of 2 stages. You can participate in the whole event or in any stage of it. However, if in Stage I, you win or get 2nd place, you are required to stay for the whole event!! The whole event lasts about 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Weekly Event (every Monday)
- Stage I - The Tournament
- Starts at 13:00 fics server time on fics and lasts about 90 minutes.
- Make sure you logon to fics at least 15 minutes in advance to join the tournament as usual (use "mam j #"). Get familiar with the rules (details) of the event. Also, don't forget "+ch 49" to listen to tournament channel.
- The format of the tournament is [5 0 r SS/7], which translates to rated games with time control of 5 0 (5 minutes per player per game with no increment) and Swiss System with 7 rounds (you will play total of 7 games). For additional details on format of the tourney, use "mam info #" (# is the number of the tournament) while online on fics.
- Every player that scores in this stage will earn new Grand Prix Points (GPP). A player's GPP will be equal to the score he/she will get in the tournament of this stage. The total new Grand Prix Points will be added to the previous total of each player and the record will be kept till the end of the year when GPP standing will define special GPP winners.
- If you win or get 2nd place in the tournament (open section), you are qualified to play in Stage II - the Battle.
- If you score the most upset points in the tournament, you are crowned as a winner of "Chess Battle" event of the week in the upset section and you earn 1 extra Grand Prix Point. In addition, you will be entered into the Hall of Fame in the upset section and will receive a prize according to the prizes section.
- If you happen to become the best placed player with a rating below 1600, you will receive a prize according to the prizes section. The winner of the upset prize is not eligible for the U1600 prize.
- The results of the tournament will be uploaded and presented in the "Status" section.
- Stage II - The Battle Game
- Starts right after the Stage I ends (around 14:30 FICS server time) and lasts about 60 minutes.
- One game called "The Battle" will be played to find out the ultimate winner of open section --> #2 vs. #1 of open section from stage I. Time control of the game is [20 12 r] (rated game with 20 minutes per player per game and 12 second increment per move).
- During The Battle Game, players of the game will be constantly providing their quick thoughts after/before almost every move!! It will be a short one sentence of "why/how" representing thoughts of the player at the moment. Players of the Battle game will be using "whisper" command to do that, which means the audience will see those comments but battle game players themselves will not see each other's comments while playing the game! It's a great opportunity to watch this game with high rated players commenting on their almost every move as it happens live! Plus, all the audience will be able not only to watch the game and players comments (use "ob game#" or "follow qualifier") but also participate in the discussion with each other (use "whisper [your text]").
- The Winner of The Battle Game is crowned as a winner of "Chess Battle" event of the week and earns 2 extra Grand Prix Points. The Runner-Up earns 1 extra Grand Prix Point. In addition, the players of the battle game will be entered into the Hall of Fame.
-
If the Battle Game is drawn, both players are declared winners and each player of the game earns 1.5 extra Grand Prix Point.
- The Battle Game will be fully recorded with all the moves, comments from the players, and full discussion of the audience. Those games will then also be deeply analyzed with Fritz 8 (the best chess analyzer) and its analysis will be included in the game along with all the other comments. The game will be uploaded and presented in the "Status" section for your future review. It's a great feature for players of the game as they will be able to go through the comments of the opponent, audience, and Fritz 8 to analyze the game later.
-
Battle game players will receive the prizes according to the prizes section.
- A player who played the most Battle Games during a year will be crowned as "Chess Battle Master" and appropriate certificate will be issued and mailed to the recipient. Also, check the prizes for the "Chess Battle Master."
TieBreaks
-
To break ties in the open section (if there is any), performance points/rating will be used. i.e. 5 ppl tie with 6.0/7.0, they will be ranked in order of their performance. Top two on that list get the #1 and #2 spots. If there is still a tie, those tied are then ranked by scored upset points. You can see the "upset points" and "performance" using the command "mam tourneystats" while playing in the tournament on fics.
-
Similarly, if there is a tie for the "Upset Winner" in the upset section, or "U1600 Winner" in the U1600 section, "performance" of those tied players will be used to break the tie.
Grand Prix System
-
Every player that scores in stage I (the Tournament) will earn new Grand Prix Points (GPP). A player's GPP will be equal to the score he/she will get in the tournament.
-
If you are forfeited or withdrawn from the tournament, you will get no new points in Grand Prix System.
-
The total new Grand Prix Points will be added to the previous total of each player and the record will be kept till the end of the year when GPP standing will define special GPP winners.
-
If you score the most upset points in the tournament, you earn 1 extra Grand Prix Point.
-
The Winner of The Battle Game earns 2 extra Grand Prix Points.

-
At the end of the year, a player on #1 place in the Grand Prix standing will be crowned as "Chess Battle Player of the Year" and appropriate certificate will be issued and mailed to the recipient.
Grand Battle Elite Event (GBEE) and Game (GBEG)
-
Grand Battle Elite Event is abbreviated as GBEE for future references and will consist of Grand Battle Elite Tournament (GBET) and Grand Battle Elite Game (GBEG).
-
GBEE is held once a year in January. For example, on January 7th, 2003, there was 2002 GBEE that was based on the performances of the players during 2002.
-
It will be the tournament by invitation only... Grand Battle Elite Tournament (GBET)! Only players participated in any weekly Battle Game during the year will be invited. So, if you made it to the final Battle Game in one of the weekly Chess Battle events, you are qualified to participate in yearly GBEE.
-
The tournament format will be: 5 0 time control, rated, Swiss System with 7 rounds (if the number of players allows for it).
-
Right after the tourney is finished, #2 and #1 from its standing will be playing the final Grand Battle Elite Game (GBEG) just like in regular weekly Battle events. The Battle Game will be again 20 12 rated in time control for players to whisper their thoughts after almost every move. All the same rules apply in GBEE as in usual weekly Battle events explained above. In case of a tie there will be two (or more if necessary) 5 0 games played in order to find a winner.
-
The Grand Battle Elite Game players (#2 and #1 from the tourney) will receive extra super valuable prizes. The prizes for this Elite Event are mentioned in the prizes section in "yearly prizes" sub-section.
-
Check status section to see the list of currently qualified players.
-
The winner of Grand Battle Elite Game is crowned as "Chess Battle Champion" and appropriate certificate will be issued and mailed to the recipient.
